High dose fish oil - What are the possible side effects and how you can avoid them
You are probably aware of the fact that, based on scientific research carried out so far relating to high dose fish oil, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that there are indeed any serious effects to consider.
What most fish oil manufacturers recommend, is that you should ideally consume 2 to 5 grams a day of fish oil, in liquid form or capsules. Now, considering that the established norm that most manufacturers follow is to sell capsules that weigh 1 gram, this stipulation translates into 2 to 5 capsules per day.
The most prominent side effects which have been frequently cited by consumers, are "fishy" aftertaste and in rare cases, gastro internal upsets like diarrhea.
These, however, are a small price to pay when you contemplate the amazing health benefits that high quality fish oil has to offer to your general wellbeing.
As research has established, the long list of health benefits includes almost all the vital organs and systems in your body: Heart, brain and the immune system are just a few examples.
Note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that our daily dosage should not exceed 2 grams.
But, what's interesting to learn about this recommendation, is that what's behind FDA's decision to say this was not their concern about possible side effects, but rather their concern about possible contamination.
Let me explain.
You all probably know that pollution in this day and age is everywhere. Heavy metals (especially mercury and lead) as well as organic compounds like PCBs and dioxins are abundant.
Most of the oceans around the world where the rich in omega 3 fatty acids fish are caught to make the supplements are no exception to the rule. If the fish oil is not properly processed to remove all the harmful toxins, then there is a high possibility that the capsule you are taking contains dangerous levels of them.
What should you, as a well-informed consumer, do to avoid any undesirable complications, like mercury poisoning?
Always make sure that for the supplements you buy, the manufacturer clearly states that he uses molecular distillation technology.
This state of the art process that ensures that all harmful contaminants are removed from the fish oil before it is encapsulated. This is done based on weight.
As for the minor side effects that are associated with high dose fish oil, try taking it on a full stomach or lower the dosage for a few days to establish whether overdose was indeed the cause for your stomach upsets. In most of the cases, these actions tend to eliminate or at least mitigate all the unpleasant side effects.
