Fish Oil Dosage:How much is good enough?

It is a fact; fish oil dosage is an issue which not so clear among consumers. While there is a consensus that fish oil has many health benefits, there is debate about how much is good enough.

What's mainly causing frustration in people is the fact that the recommended daily fish oil dosage might differ from product to product. In addition, people are afraid that when they take too much, then their health might be in danger.

The truth of the matter is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each one of us, depending on our unique medical conditions, has different requirements and limitations.

Therefore, I have to stress this now: Always ask your personal physician before taking any kind of supplements. Depending on your medical profile and records, he or she is the one to decide what's good for you.

There are two parameters that determine your ideal dosage: One is the content of the fish oil capsule and the other is, as I said, your particular medical situation.

Capsule contents

Every fish oil capsule contains concentrations of omega 3 essential fatty acids. While there are in essence several types, the most important of these acids are two: DHA and EPA (short for docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid respectively).

Of these two, the most important is DHA. The reason for this is their different chemical structure. DHA can readily convert into EPA when our body needs it, while the opposite is not true. That is, EPA is not so good at converting to DHA.

This is why you see different recommended fish oil dosage, depending on the product, even though the weight of the capsule is most of the times the same all across the products (1000 mg is the norm). Since percent concentrations of DHA might vary, you need different numbers of capsules to obtain the same quantity of DHA.

As a rule of thumb, as long as the DHA percent concentration is somewhere between 20% to 25%, then the vast majority of people with general good health need about 2 capsules a day (total equal to 2 grams).

Medical condition

The situation is a little bit more complex when you are diagnosed with a certain medical condition.

I am not going to give you here a detailed list of all the cases. Just to illustrate the fact that different conditions require different treatments, I will give you what the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends. While for people with high triglycerides they recommend a daily fish oil dosage of 2 to 4 grams (2 to 4 capsules a day), for people with coronary heart disease (CHD) the recommended dosage is just 1 gram (1 capsule per day).

Therefore, exercise caution and always seek your physician's advice before embarking on any dietary supplementation program!
