Dr Sears Fish Oil: Is it Cost Effective?
Comparison with Dr Sears Fish Oil
It is a fact that in this day and age all of us are re-evaluating our daily expenditures. What we are looking for nowadays is how to get the most value with the minimum amount of money.
The money we spend on our health, both ours personally and our family's is no exception. Of course, we don't want to compromise on quality. What we are interested in is to find that service or product which will give us the most "bang for our buck".
What I will do in this article is to present you the results of the research I did, when I compared the Xtend Life fish oil product that I now use with a similar product of one of its most well known competitors, Dr Sears fish oil Omega RX. The product used for comparison was a bottle containing 60 capsules of fish oil, each capsule weighing 1,000 mg (1 gram).
All the information was obtained from the companies' official website.
Quality comparison
As I already mentioned, it is imperative that quality should not be compromised. In terms of omega 3 fish oil products, quality is determined by two key parameters:
- Amount of DHA omega 3 fatty acid that it contains. Nutrition experts agree that among all of the fatty acids, DHA is considered to be the most important. The reason for this is that it can readily be converted to other essential fatty acids (EPA and ALA are next in importance), when our body needs them. The opposite process, that conversion of EPA or ALA to DHA, is not so efficient (not better than 20% conversion).
Now, to compare the two brands, I looked at the percent concentration of DHA in their fish oil capsules. Dr Sears fish oil has 20% DHA concentration, while the respective figure published for my brand of fish oil was 28%.
Seen from another angle, the total volume of DHA in each bottle of Dr Sears fish oil was 12,000 mg, while the respective figure for my brand was 17,400 mg.
- The second quality parameter is purity. This is assessed by measuring the level of heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins in the fish oil. By comparing the two brands based on the relevant figures in their Certificate of Analysis (COA), I concluded that neither is significantly better than the other. The per volume concentration of pollutants is below the international standards for both.
Cost per gram of DHA
Now, having established that the two brands are of comparable quality, let's find out which is the cheapest.
The retail value of the product (one bottle of 600 capsules) is $16.85 and $26.95 for my brand and Dr Sears fish oil respectively and the basis of cost comparison is gram of DHA.
Now, considering that the total DHA volume per bottle is 17,400 and 12,000 mgs for my brand and Dr Sears fish oil respectively, then, if you do the math, it turns out that for each gram of DHA I pay $0.97, while the user of the competing brand pays $2.24.
So, assuming that a daily healthy intake of DHA amounts to 500 mg, then my monthly savings amounts to $19.05!
